Double‐Take for Virtulized Platforms
If your production is physical or virtual, Double-Take can protect it as it can run at the hypervisor layer of virtualization platform, or from within the guest VM or a physical host. At DR however, more often then not, Virtualization is utilized. Because double‐take is hardware or hyper‐visor independent, a mix of configurations is supported.
Many organization leverage virtualization for production. Almost every organization today leverages virtualization cloud either private or external for recoverability due to capability to scale resources on demand as they’re needed rather than paying for them up‐front. Because of this, Double‐Take is aware of the drives required to be injected into a virtual environment, and provides capability to auto‐provision machines at failover automatically.

Virtual server technologies provide businesses and IT departments with the ability to do more with less, enabling the consolidation of data and applications onto a single server. The result is reduced costs, simplified IT management, and minimized space requirements. The need to protect these virtualized systems is paramount as they are running multiple business‐critical applications, requiring a higher level of protection. Double‐take is able to replicate at the host level of Hyper‐V as the virtual machines are files like any other.

When consolidating workloads onto a single physical server, the risk increases. Double‐Take for Hyper‐V allows to mitigate that risk by replicating all or selected critical VM’s locally or offsite at the host level of the hyper‐visor.

Microsoft’s native availability and resource balancing technology for Hyper‐V is MSCS (Microsoft Cluster Services). The technology is called Live‐Migration or Quick Migration. Obviously having the machines on shared storage is still a single point of failure. Double‐take’s Availability Geo‐Cluster allows for a nothing shared cluster, by having a replicated cluster disk and thus a completely standalone replica copy of VM.

Although not as bandwidth friendly or I/O efficient as the flagship product from Double‐take
Software, Double‐take for Virtual System, in purely virtual environments, Host‐Level protection for ESX is a cost effective option.

Double‐Take for Virtual Infrastructure runs of as a windows service on any machine, and polls production ESX hosts to take periodic – 15 minute snapshots that it then sends on via SCP to the target server and applies them sequentially.
